Maryland Department of the Environment’s (MDE) responsibilities include conducting inspections of dams based on their "hazard class," issuing permits for construction, repairs or for modifying dam structures; conducting construction inspections and working with dam owners and emergency management professionals to develop and exercise “Emergency Action Plan” to be used in the event of dam failure.

Description of Position Assisting the Division Chief and the staff of Dam Safety Divison with screening the permit applicaitons for construction of new and/or repair of existing dams, Dam inspections, Inspection Reports, Inspection letters, coordination with dam owners and their engineering consultants. This job also requires data entry and uploading of all inspections, scanned drawings, photographs, engineering reports, and document into the Division's database.

Description of Position Must possess or be actively pursuing an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certificate with the intention of applying for a professional engineering license (PE) with the Commonwealth of Virginia once the EIT qualifications are met.
The successful candidate will assist a professional engineer in contacting dam owners, dam owners consulting engineers, local, state and federal government offices in an attempt to bring dams into compliance with the Commonwealth’s Dam Safety Act and the Virginia Impounding Structures Regulations. This position will be required to use engineering principles to make recommendations for the issuance and/or denial of certificates, permits and corrective measures. A valid VA driver’s license and proficiency in the use of personal computer applications are required. Abilities to accurately review technical documents submitted by dam owners and their consulting engineers; work effectively with multiple internal and external customers; develop and make successful presentations; communicate effectively; maintain electronic and hardcopy files with detailed information; work independently and in a team environment; provide accurate technical assistance; and develop sound engineering judgment that will be checked by a dam safety staff professional engineer before providing engineering advice to a dam owner.
Some day and occasional overnight travel and working in the physical field environment are required.
Required Education, Experience, Skills Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering disciplines with first hand knowledge or classroom emphasis in hydrology, hydraulics, soils, foundation and dam design, construction and maintenance.
Pay & Benefits: $40,959 - $48,000; excellent state benefits
