Our Community: The States
ASDSO was started in 1984 by a group of state dam safety officials from various states across the country, who had an interest in organizing a national association to improve dam safety. Representatives from each state make up the voting membership of ASDSO and the governing board is chosen from these 50 individuals.
The vast majority of dams in the USA are regulated by state dam safety programs. Alabama is the only state that lacks a dam safety program; all other states, plus Puerto Rico, participate in the National Dam Safety Program.
