Dam Safety 2021: Presenter Toolbox

Congratulations on being selected as a Dam Safety 2021 speaker! The Presenter's Toolbox will be updated regularly to help you prepare for the conference.

Conference Presenter Updates

ASDSO is excited to move forward with plans for Dam Safety 2021 at the Music City Center in Nashville, TN the week of September 12-15. Dam Safety 2021 will return to an in-person format in Nashville with an On-Demand component. During registration, attendees will be able to select if they are joining us in Nashville (with full access to all On-Demand content following the conference) or if they will be accessing the content On-Demand only. What does this mean for speakers? All sessions in Nashville will be recorded and available on a secure platform following the conference. Those presenters who opted to do present virtual-only will have their presentations recorded prior to the conference in Nashville and the presentation will be uploaded to the Dam Safety On-Demand platform.

Poster Lightning Talks FAQs: In-Person

  • Do I need a PowerPoint?
    • You have the option to submit a PPT if you like; however, it is not required.
  • How long should my poster-lightning talk be?
    • The Lightning Talks are very short, three-minute oral presentations, focused on the most significant points in your poster topic. Questions are answered at the poster board and attendees come by after the lightning talk portion.
  • What are the size recommendations/formatting guidelines for the poster?
    • The poster session is primarily a visual presentation (as contrasted with an oral one), therefore it is appropriate to prepare charts, graphs, photos, and drawings to convey the message of the presentation. Use bold color and short, descriptive captions that will enhance the viewers’ understanding of the project or issue. Pages of text attached to the display board will not be effective. Posters may be one large panel or several smaller panels.  If using several smaller panels, they should be designed to be easily arranged on the display board during set-up. Mounting board should be cardboard or heavyweight paper that provides sufficient rigidity. Each poster presenter will be provided with one 4’ tall by 6’ wide tackboard on a stand. Please design your display to fit the space provided.
  • If I am presenting live in Nashville, how will my poster-lightning talk be shown On-Demand?
    • Those presenting on-site in Nashville will either be recorded live during the event or asked to set up a virtual presentation that can be recorded and used for the On-Demand platform. ASDSO will notify these individuals by August 1 of the recording method that will be used. ASDSO will use the conference Collaborate page to provide an area for Poster-Lightning talk discussions during the On-Demand timeframe.

Poster-Lightning Talks FAQs: On-Demand

  • What is the format for the Lightning Talk?
    • Poster-lightning talks will be pre-recorded and run 3-5 minutes in length. Your presentation can be structured in any way you like. You could create a presentation with a voiceover, use a sample poster similar to what you would have onsite, or simply present from the comforts of your desk. It is up to you and your creativity to explain your topic and engage users to want to review your poster and read your paper (if applicable).
  • What are the visual aid requirements for my poster?
    • Posters will be uploaded to the system as PDFs. You have the option to submit a PPT if you like; however, it is not required.
  • How will presenters address questions from attendees?
    • Presentations are pre-recorded, so we will have a space on ASDSO Collaborate for participants to chat with PLT presenters.
