HEC-RAS: Agenda

Note: Classes will begin at 10:00 am and end at 8:30 pm ET, with an hour for lunch and breaks in the morning and afternoon.

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • Lesson 1: Overview of HEC-RAS – What does HEC-RAS Do?
    • We will discuss the basics of HEC-RAS steady flow modeling.
  • Lesson 2: Basic Input Geometry
    • This lesson will discuss the basics of geometry input for HEC-RAS steady flow models.  
  • Lesson 3: Basic Input Flow and Resistance
    • Basic flow data and boundary conditions input for HEC-RAS
  • Lesson 4: One-Dimensional Hydraulic Modeling in HEC-RAS
    • Different flow regimes (steady vs unsteady, uniform versus varied, sub-critical flow versus super-critical flow.  Also, the computational procedures will be covered and situations where unsteady and 2-Demensal Flow is most appropriate.
  • Workshop 1: Model Run
    • The workshop have students input cross sections to an existing (x,y,z) data file, enter Manning’s n and flow data, etc.  Run the model and review the output.

  • Lesson 5: Viewing Results and Review Workshop
    • Viewing results; cross section plots; profile plots; x-y-z plots; summary tables; errors warnings and notes

  • Lesson 6: RAS Mapper
    • Intro to RAS Mapper.  Using RAS Mapper for Model Development and viewing results.
  • Workshop 2: Using RAS Mapper
  • Lesson 7: Hydraulics of Bridge Waterways and Selecting a Bridge Modeling Approach
    • Nature of flow through bridges: components of bridge losses; cross-section locations; defining ineffective flow areas; contraction and expansion losses. Available approaches to bridge loss computations within HEC-RAS; Selecting the appropriate bridge modeling approach for various situations of low flow bridge hydraulics; selecting the appropriate bridge modeling approach for various.
  • Workshop 3: Bridge Computations   
    • Students will learn to enter and edit bridge data; perform bridge hydraulic computations; and review pertinent results.  Workshop 2 will use the solution to workshop 1 and then enter the bridge data and run the model.

  • Lesson 8: Unsteady Flow Modeling with HEC-RAS
    • Input data requirements pre-processing of data reviewing output from unsteady flow models.

  • Lesson 9: Overview of H&H for Dam Safety 
    • Hydrologic modeling versus Hydraulic Modeling –differences between H&H software. 
  • Lesson 10: Dams and Reservoirs 
    • Hydraulic features of dams and reservoirs, modeling dams and reservoirs in HEC-RAS
  • Workshop 4: Reservoir Analysis  
  • Lesson 11: Dam Breach Analysis
    • Breach parameters, assumptions, sensitivity analysis
  • Workshop 5: Dam Breach Analysis
