  • Welcome and Introductions
    • The instructors will cover basic information on the course.  Students will introduce themselves and share how they intend to use the model and specific expectations for the course.
  • Lesson 1: Overview of HEC-RAS – What does HEC-RAS Do? 
    • This lesson will discuss the basics of HEC-RAS steady flow modeling.

  • Lesson 2: Basic Input Geometry  
    • This lesson will discuss the basics of geometry input for HEC-RAS steady flow models.

    • This lesson will discuss basic flow data and boundary conditions input for HEC-RAS
  • Workshop 1: Navigating HEC-RAS 
    • This workshop will introduce students to the windows and file management in HEC-RAS.

  • Lesson 4: One-Dimensional Hydraulic Modeling in HEC-RAS  
    • This lesson will discuss different flow regimes (steady vs unsteady, uniform versus varied, sub-critical flow versus super-critical flow).  The lesson will also include computational procedures and situations where unsteady and 2-Dimensional Flow is most appropriate.
  • Workshop 2: Calculation of Water Surface Profiles  
    • The workshop will allow students to input cross-sections to an existing (x,y,z) data file, enter Manning’s n and flow data, etc.  Run the model and review the output.  
  • Break 
  • Lesson 5: Viewing Results 
    • This lesson will discuss viewing results; cross-section plots; profile plots; x-y-z plots; summary tables; errors warnings and notes.  The prior workshop will also be reviewed.
  • Workshop 2A: Calculation of Water Surface Profiles – Boothe Park 2
    • This workshop will allow students to further explore calculating water surface profiles through a comprehensive case study with sensitivity analyses.

  • Lesson 6: RAS Mapper  
    • This lesson will discuss functionality available within RAS Mapper.  Students will learn how to use RAS Mapper for model development and viewing results.

  • Workshop 3: Using RAS Mapper  
    • This workshop will provide students an opportunity to modify a model using features within RAS Mapper.  Students will also review output.
  • Lesson 7: Hydraulics of Bridge Waterways and Selecting a Bridge Modeling Approach  
    • This workshop will discuss the nature of flow through bridges: components of bridge losses; cross-section locations; defining ineffective flow areas; and contraction and expansion losses. The available approaches to bridge loss computations within HEC-RAS will be reviewed and selecting the appropriate bridge modeling approach will be discussed.  
  • Break 
    • This workshop will provide students an opportunity to enter and edit bridge data; perform bridge hydraulic computations; and review pertinent results.  
  • Lesson 8: Unsteady Flow Modeling with HEC-RAS  
    • This lesson will discuss input data requirements of unsteady flow modeling as well as running and reviewing output from unsteady flow models.

  • Lesson 9: Overview of H&H for Dam Safety 
    • This lesson will discuss hydrologic modeling versus Hydraulic Modeling, outlining the differences between H&H software.

  • Lesson 10: Dams and Reservoirs   
    • This lesson will focus on the hydraulic features of dams and reservoirs.  Methods of modeling dams and reservoirs in HEC-RAS will be covered.
  • Workshop 6: Reservoir Analysis  
    • In this workshop, students will gain experience modeling dams and reservoirs.  Students will add a storage area and inline structure to a model and complete a run.

  • Workshop 6: Reservoir Analysis Continued
  • Lesson 11: Dam Breach Analysis  
    • This lesson will discuss breach analysis within HEC-RAS including estimating breach parameters and performing sensitivity analysis.
  • Break
  • Workshop 7: Dam Breach Analysis  
    • In this workshop, students will use HEC-RAS to perform a dam break analysis.  Students will enter dam break parameters, run the dam break computations and analyze and interpret dam break results.
